Sierra National Forest Begins Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Route Designation Process

Workshop info from the Forest Service

Clovis, California ... Traveling the back roads and trails in the Sierra National Forest on an Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) has been a part of forest recreation for years. By the year 2008, the USDA Forest Service, with the assistance interested publics, intends to have a mapped designated route system in place so visitors will know where to go to have an enjoyable timeon their OHVs and other motorized vehicles in the Sierra National Forest.
In May, the Forest Service is starting the three-year process and is inviting the public to attend a workshop to introduce the Sierra National Forest OHV route mapping and designation process. The workshops will beheld on Thursday, May 12, 2005 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Oakhurst Community Center, 39800 Road 425B, Oakhurst, California and on Saturday, May 14, 2005 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Sierra National Fores tSupervisor’s Office, 1600 Tollhouse Road, Clovis, California.
“The objective of the meetings is to familiarize people with the OHV route designation process that the Sierra National Forest is starting and to look specifically at the mapping work that has been completed on the Sierra National Forest,” said Sierra Forest Supervisor Ed Cole.
The public will be invited to review maps of the forest watersheds and learn the process to add trails or routes that they know exist but were not found in a field inventory. Over the past year field crews have used the latest technologies, employing Global Positioning Systems (GPS), to map the unclassified roads, system trails, and unplanned non-system routes within the Sierra National Forest.
The second goal of the meeting will be to learn how the Forest Serviceplans to work through the OHV route designation process which will continue until 2008. This will be the first step in what will be a very lengthy but comprehensive process and it is important that forest users understand how we plan to proceed, the next steps and time frames to accomplish this goal.
